Cross Connection Controls, what commercial business owners need to know.

This article refers to Cross Connections. These can also be called Backflow Preventers, Premise Isolation or DCVA. Check out our video below for more info on Backflow Preventers.

A Cross Connection Control stops wastewater from flowing backwards and contaminating drinking water pipes.

This is sometimes referred to as back flow.

Cross Connections occur when there is a physical connection between the city’s drinking water system and a source of contamination.

These can occur in homes or businesses. The City of Winnipeg requires businesses to install Cross Connection Controls and have them inspected annually.

If the pressure in the pipes connected to the city’s water supply drops or becomes negative then wastewater can be drawn into the drinking water system. A Cross Connection Control prevents this.

An example of when this could happen is if the Fire Department connects to a fire hydrant. Their hoses draw so much water that the water in the pipes of the surrounding homes and businesses can flow backwards in order to supply pressure.

Another example of a potential back flow situation is during a water main break.

It’s not important to understand all the fluid dynamics of a back flow situation as the owner of a commercial property.

What is important is to understand the steps you need to take to keep others safe and stay in compliance with regulations.
