How To Test Your Sump Pump
How to test your sump pump depends on what kind of pump you are using. There are two main types of pump.
Float Actuated
Diaphragm Pump
To test a float actuated pump simply grab the float on the side of the pump and lift it until you hear it click. Once it has actuated it should start pumping water up and out the discharge and away from your house.
To test a diaphragm pump you will have to fill your sump pit with water from a hose until it is a few inches above the pump. This is because diaphragm pumps have no float. Once the water is above the pump the pump should actuate and start pumping water away from your house.
We call spring “sump pump season” in the plumbing industry, in our hometown of Winnipeg. This is because with the melting snow and spring rains, groundwater levels rise and cause extra water to accumulate in and around the foundations of homes. This is when it is necessary to have a working sump pump.
A sump pump removes accumulated water from your sump pit which is designed to collect water from around your home’s foundation to prevent flooding. Having a sump pit and a working sump pump protects most people’s largest investment; their home.
